Vasilis Karras: The Legendary Laiko Singer

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Vasilis Karras, one of Greece's most renowned laika singers, was born in Kokkinohori, near Kavala. At the tender age of 10, he relocated to Thessaloniki with his family. In 1969, at 16, he made his stage debut at the bouzoukia "Prosfiga." His talent and charismatic performances quickly gained him popularity throughout Northern Greece as a laika performer.

Recording Breakthrough and Collaboration

In 1980, Karras released his first album, which propelled him to national recognition. Throughout the 1990s, he collaborated with renowned musicians such as Michalis Rakintzis and Zafirios Melas. In 1996, he embarked on a groundbreaking partnership with composer Phoebus.

Together, they crafted the album "Metaxy Mas," which became a quadruple platinum success and catapulted Karras to superstardom. This album marked the birth of his distinctive musical style, which seamlessly blended contemporary Western music with traditional bouzouki-based folk songs. Karras and Phoebus continued their collaboration with the equally successful album "Apolyti Apo Ta Dema."

International Acclaim and Collaborations

Throughout his career, Karras has collaborated with a plethora of Greek artists, including Toli Voskopoulos, Christos Dantis, Irini Merkouri, Kostas Karafotis, and Despina Vandi. His concerts have garnered immense success worldwide, with performances in the United States, Canada, Western Europe, Asia, and Australia.

Recent Projects and Collaborations

In 2012, Karras performed at the Teatro Music Hall in Athens with Nikos Makropoulos and the band Vegas. That same year, his album "Apolyti Apo Ta Dema" was certified platinum, and a "BEST OF" series featuring four discs of his greatest hits was released. He also released a successful duet with rapper Master Tempo titled "Ola Einai Entaxi."

In the winter of 2012-2013, Karras returned to the Teatro Music Hall in Athens, this time accompanied by Pantelis Pantelidis and Paola Foka. His performances continue to captivate audiences with his unique blend of passion, authenticity, and musical brilliance.
